My First Post

Hello! As this is my first post I’ll be a bit more meta than I intend to in my the future.

As I’ve already written in the About page of this blog, I intend to write about logic and other things I enjoy (as a matter of fact, the next post should be a brief introduction to logic), but here I’ll go a bit into the details about how and why I made this blog.

How

I’ll not go into great technical details about how I made this blog, I’ll only give an overview. I had the idea to create a personal blog for several months, in the beginning I though about using WordPress or Blogger, that was until I talked about with my friend João and he suggested using GitHub Pages for publishing it, thus using Jekyll to make the actual blog.

At first I didn’t quite like this idea. I’m not very fond of URLs like repo.github.io and I wasn’t very much a fan of Markdown (I now am), and I also wanted to have the option to have several languages in my blog, something that João had already researched and told me that it was a massive headache (he was right). Despite that, I chose to use GitHub Pages + Jekyll, partially because I didn’t want to work with raw HTML/CSS, partially because it seemed to be less work this way, partially because João had made his blog a month before with GH Pages and he made it seem it wasn’t all that bad (more so, I had someone to help me should I need (I did)).

At the end of the day, the majority of the problems I had were caused by my on inattention, tiredness (don’t code after 9 PM kids) or lack of knowledge of how Jekyll & friends work. No problem was all that had to solve (thanks João) and I’m content with the result, although there are certain things that still annoy me a little and that will have to be solved in due time.

Why

I have two main goals with this blog. The first is to have some presence in the internet beyond social media, a place were people can get to know more about me and what I do, something I found to be very common in academia.

The second one is to practice my writing in other languages, manly english. All pages and posts are hand translated by me (yes, even this one) for this very reason, something that dos get a bit tedious but that is undeniably important. Eventually, when I’m studying german I’ll also translate into it. Should I ever learn other languages (the next one will probably be spanish) and this blog still exists, I’ll try translating into those languages too, though I make no promises now.

The end

That’s it for now. In 2025 I’ll write more things here, but before I have a game of Civilization VI to finish.
